Beyond the Code: Your Career Path as a Software Engineer or Developer at Intuit

In general cases software developers and software engineers vary in role responsibility, skillset, goals, etc.  At Intuit, we recognize that there is no distinction aside from naming convention.  As a global company, there are times when recruiters must follow guidelines and laws of a particular country/region.  For instance, in Canada, there are restrictions around the use of 'engineer' as it is an accredited title. This means that we post our roles and hire as a Developer but they are the same as engineers.

What do Intuit Software Roles look like?

Intuit is moving fast to continue paving the path as a fintech leader with Done-For-You experiences.  Our engineers work tirelessly to bring alive our GenAI/GenOS platform, consumer platforms (TurboTax, Quickbooks, Credit Karma, and Mailchimp), and now more than ever, bringing AI+HI to the platforms to power financial prosperity for small and medium sized businesses.

Recently, one team of engineers launched AI Native IEP.  It is a platform revamp focused on delivering a dramatically simpler experience and accelerating expert adoption of AI features. The idea was to give experts a single, intuitive interface to manage their work, both supporting them in the moment with real-time guidances that anticipate and answer questions during calls, and after the call by automating follow-ups and workflow updates.

Skills that power our Engineers

A critical component of modern software engineering is mastering AI/ML frameworks and core AI system fundamentals, in addition to foundational software engineering principles.

This includes proficiency in concepts like agent graph frameworks, effective prompting/context engineering, and evaluation methods. It is vital to continue honing best practices and emerging frameworks such as LangGraph, Agent to Agent Protocol, Model Context Protocol, and specialized agent development kits like Google's ADK and the Claude Agent SDK.

A bonus is solid understanding of basic machine learning principles—some examples are vectorization/semantic clustering, Learning-to-Rank (LTR) models, and performance metrics like F1 scoring—is necessary for success within the holistic ecosystem.

Career development with Intuit

Intuit prides itself in mentoring and career development at all stages.  From early career, moving up through the ranks of your department, to adjacent moves within Intuit, we offer employees the opportunity for growth and development.

One employee came from the Mentoring Network with Intuit Toronto, was promoted, and then transitioned to a new role under a new organization all with Intuit’s support moving from Canada to the United States.

Intuit provides a clear and valued structure for career pathway development, from the transition between roles like Software Engineer 1 to Software Engineer 2, or Staff Engineer to Engineering Manager. This structure includes defined career ladder metrics, allowing you to align your evolving skills, benchmark progress, and receive guidance through regular check-ins with your manager.

Intuit supports growth through mentorship and career development programs that are designed to help you build and refine your skills and learning opportunities through workshops, tech talks, and collaboration with talented and engaged coworkers!  One of Intuit’s strongest technologist events is the bi-annual Global Engineering Days.  This week-long event brings talented team members together to work on projects called “Design for Delight” (D4D) for our customers and internal teams.

An award-winning fintech at your fingertips

With AI rapidly developing, our technologists’ focus is on experimentation and speed across daily work.  Builder culture is a deeply ingrained mind set empowering technologists to take extreme ownership over the end-to-end product development lifecycle.  From planning, testing, implementation, Intuit provides tech talent career development programs, innovation events, and a culture that values initiative, experimentation, and rapid innovation.
