Staff Data Engineer, Experimentation (Mailchimp)

Job Overview

The Data Products team at Mailchimp is responsible for building capabilities that enable peeps from across the company to make better decisions with data. What that actually looks like is working with folks from across the company to understand their needs and then surface data in a meaningful way through tools and platforms to help them drive the business forward. Day to day you’ll be building governed datasets to feed analytical reports and data science models, optimizing and creating new ETL pipelines, or building data models in Looker. We have a lot of tools in our toolbelt, but all with the main goal of helping Mailchimp to continue to use data more effectively. W

We are looking for a technical leader to lead our experimentation delivery and data enablement capability. You will actively influence the architecture and technical roadmap within this scope and collaborate with stakeholders and customers across the company to determine and inform prioritization. Knowledge of and/or prior experience working on experimentation is required, though prior experience on an Experimentation Platform team is not required.

Responsibilities

● Understand and influence product telemetry practices to support experimentation needs.

● Have strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with leaders in product, data science, and engineering.

● Partner with teams across the business and third parties to understand their needs and come up with end-to-end data solutions

● Model data to create core, governed data sets for the entire company to leverage

● Build scalable transformation pipelines that enable teams to easily clean up, normalize, and govern data for broad consumption

● Build tools and processes to help make the right data accessible to the right people

● Become a subject matter expert on the various datasets and tools we have at Mailchimp.

Qualifications

● 7+ years of experience as a Software Engineer and/or have an educational background in a quantitative field such as Computer Science, Physics, Applied Math, or Statistics.

● Have strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with leaders in product, data science, and engineering.

● Strong technical accomplishments in SQL and data analysis skills

● Experience with MPP databases such as BigQuery, Redshift, or Snowflake. We use BigQuery here at Mailchimp

● Familiarity with Python, Go, Java or another OOP language. Most of our tools are primarily built in Python

● Familiarity with PHP and front-end technologies/concepts related to experimentation.

● Strong technical accomplishments in SQL and data analysis skills

● Familiarity with ETL orchestration tools like Apache Airflow and Google Dataflow

● Strong business intuition and ability to understand complex business systems

● Familiarity with additional transformation platforms like Apache Spark and Beam

● Expertise in visualization technologies like Looker, Tableau, or Qlik Sense

● Experience with GCP/AWS or other cloud providers Bonus points:

● Deep understanding of statistics, data science, or large scale data processing
