We are hiring a Staff Software Engineer to join our PDX (Development Ecosystem) organization. This role will contribute to building Modern SaaS AIR, a next-generation AI-native platform, specifically focusing on developing the next generation of AIR Paved Road. The ideal candidate will be a technical leader who thrives in solving complex engineering challenges, mentoring others, and driving innovation to deliver world-class solutions.
As a Staff Software Engineer, you will be responsible for overseeing the development of major capabilities and components of Modern SaaS AIR. You will collaborate across engineering, product, design, and other cross-functional teams to ensure seamless delivery of technical solutions that delight our customers. With a strong customer-centric mindset and a knack for simplifying systems, you will guide the team across all phases of the software development lifecycle, serving as a domain expert for the platform.
This role demands a high level of ownership, innovation, and the ability to mentor and develop team members while maintaining a high standard of code quality, architecture, and operational excellence.
Responsibilities
- Drive end-to-end development of platform capabilities and the AIR Paved Road, ensuring scalability, reliability, and maintainability.
- Provide technical leadership and mentor team members to grow their skills and ensure high-impact delivery.
- Collaborate with product teams to deeply understand customer pain points and deliver solutions that meet their needs, reflecting strong engineering practices.
- Define and implement best practices for coding, system design, and release management.
- Design and develop high-quality back-end systems, APIs (GRPC, REST/OData/GraphQL), and integration tools.
- Drive the design and architecture of platform components in alignment with modern cloud-native principles (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes, ArgoCD).
- Identify and prioritize platform improvements to simplify developer experiences, optimize operational efficiency, and reduce technical debt.
- Lead scrum teams (5–10 engineers) across the development lifecycle, including planning, design, reviews, and production release.
- Focus on operational excellence, ensuring high availability, disaster recovery, and robust monitoring frameworks.
- Encourage and build a culture of innovation and eagerness to explore new technologies in the team.
- Handle escalations, incident management, and coordinate post-mortem resolutions for production issues.
- Ensure operational excellence, designing for low MTTD/MTTR, HADR & fast recovery/self healing.
- Actively participate in recruiting, developing, and retaining strong engineering talent.
Qualifications
- 6+ years of software engineering experience, with strong focus on platform engineering and service-oriented architecture.
- Expertise in problem-solving, algorithms, and data structures.
- Proficiency in a major programming language, with preference given to Python & Groovy. Familiarity with jar, war deployment structures is a plus.
- Hands-on experience with back-end integration, web services, APIs (GRPC, REST/OData/GraphQL), and data formats (JSON, XML, ProtoBuf).
- 1+ year of experience with front-end development frameworks such as React.js.
- Strong understanding and experience in cloud native technologies (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes, ArgoCD).
- Familiarity with CI/CD tools like Jenkins and GitOps processes.
- Proven track record of driving projects end-to-end with scrum teams (design → delivery → user impact).
- Demonstrated experience in cross-functional collaboration and strong technical leadership.
- Deep understanding of operational excellence in software systems, including deployment architecture, monitoring (MTTD/MTTR), incident management, and root cause analysis.
