Job Overview

The Email Editing team owns the creative heart of Mailchimp: the editors millions of customers use to design, personalize, and publish email campaigns that reach hundreds of millions of inboxes. Our work spans the full stack, and then some:

  • A modern, interactive email editor — a rich React + TypeScript editing experience where customers visually compose, style, and preview their campaigns.
  • Backend services that validate content, apply brand styling, generate previews, and render customer designs into HTML that displays correctly across notoriously inconsistent email clients.
  • A large-scale web application serving millions of users, where we modernize long-lived product surfaces while keeping them reliable for the customers who depend on them every day.
  • AI-powered editing — services that let customers edit their emails in natural language: "make the header blue and add a Summer Sale banner."

"Fullstack" is not a buzzword here. In a given quarter you might evolve how email content is structured and stored, optimize the rendering pipeline, ship a new editing interaction in the visual canvas, and improve how our AI features manipulate customer designs — all in service of one editing experience.


Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and operate features end-to-end across the stack: a rich frontend editing experience, backend content and rendering services, and AI-powered capabilities.
  • Help set technical direction for how customer email content is structured, validated, and versioned — and evolve those formats without breaking millions of customers' saved campaigns and templates.
  • Own rendering correctness: turn customer designs into email HTML that renders reliably across Gmail, Outlook, Apple Mail, and the long tail of email clients, while meeting performance and accessibility standards.
  • Shape our AI editing capabilities: design the interfaces between AI-driven edits and customer content, and hold AI-produced changes to the same quality bar as human-authored ones.
  • Lead workstreams that modernize legacy technology — migrating customers and their saved content safely to newer experiences, shipped incrementally with controlled rollouts.
  • Operate what you ship: instrument services with logging, metrics, and tracing; participate in on-call; and use observability data to keep quality high in production.
  • Build for scale, accessibility, and compliance: millions of users, WCAG accessibility standards, and awareness of email regulations such as GDPR and CAN-SPAM.
  • Multiply the team: mentor engineers, write clear design documents, raise the bar in code review, and collaborate closely with design, product management, and partner teams across Mailchimp and Intuit.
  • Champion responsible AI-assisted development — use modern AI tooling to move faster while establishing the practices that keep generated code reviewable and trustworthy.

Qualifications

Required

  • 8+ years of professional software development experience (or equivalent demonstrated ability), including several years building and shipping production web applications at scale.
  • Hands-on experience building LLM-powered product features: working with agent frameworks, designing tools for AI systems, prompt design, or evaluation pipelines.
  • Deep expertise in TypeScript/JavaScript and React, including experience building complex, state-heavy user interfaces (editors, canvases, design tools, or comparably interactive products).
  • Strong server-side engineering experience in at least one of Node.js, PHP, or Python — and genuine willingness to work across more than one, since our stack spans several.
  • Experience designing, operating, and debugging production APIs and services, including instrumentation, monitoring, and incident response.
  • A track record of staff-level technical leadership: driving initiatives that span multiple engineers or teams, decomposing large or ambiguous problems, and mentoring others.
  • Strong testing discipline across unit, integration, and end-to-end levels, and habits that keep large, long-lived codebases healthy.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, suited to a distributed team where design docs and async collaboration carry real weight.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience — we care about what you can do, not the path you took to learn it.

Nice to have — none of these are required

  • Experience with HTML email rendering and its constraints (email client quirks, templating frameworks, deliverability considerations).
  • Experience building editors or document tooling: rich-text or visual editors, schema-driven UIs, undo/redo systems, or collaborative editing.
  • Experience leading legacy modernization — incrementally replacing older frameworks or architectures in a system that must stay reliable throughout.
  • Familiarity with high-scale data and infrastructure: large relational databases, caching, container orchestration, and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Depth in web accessibility (WCAG) beyond the basics.
  • Familiarity with email and privacy regulations (GDPR, CAN-SPAM).
